Many parents have contacted me to ask about their rights and the rights of their children in public schools. Schools have the obligation to maintain a safe environment for our children. In most circumstances, school personnel do not have the right to touch students, much less punish students physically. Students who receive special education services may have even more rights.
Parents and school personnel should work together for the wellbeing of your children.
I worked for 17 years in public schools in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, including 8 years as an administrator. If you have problems with your child's school, first, speak with the school administrators. If you still have concerns, consult with an experienced attorney who understands your family's needs.
